The process of selecting units from a population in such a way that the sample is representative of the whole population and so can be used to draw reasonable conclusions about that population.

In order for this to be true the sample must be representative of the population and selected at random. To be useful the sample must also be large enough for us to have faith in the reliability of the findings.
