CART: Christian African Relief Trust

In 1982 Guildford Tompkins and his wife Jean responded to a magazine appeal from a Ghanaian student by sending a box of food and clothing. A letter of thanks in return prompted them to send another. From those small beginnings the charity CART was founded and now 24 fourty foot containers are sent to Africa a year.

Despite this growth CART is still run entirely by volunteers from the Trustees, through the Management Committee to the collectors, packers, loaders of goods and loyal staff in our charity shop.

Gifts of clothing, shoes, household goods, blankets, educational and medical supplies, typewriters, sewing machines, computers and bicycles and tools are collected or delivered to CART's warehouse for sorting and packing ready for despatch. Aqua boxes for water purification, donated by Wirksworth Rotary Club, form a regular part of any consignment.
