What is Important to Employees

Ray Robertson explains why employees’ views matter and provides examples of the most effective non-cash reward programmes for employees.

First, let’s look at the issues that will compel change. The workforce is complex and more diverse than ever, employees are more informed about jobs and the market than ever before, so your employee value proposition must be compelling. Employees with skills that are in short supply (and shortages are occurring in many types of jobs and across all sectors of the economy) have tremendous power in the employment market, so targeted selection and retention is essential. No longer are employees willing to accept that their organisation knows what’s best for them and they will compel you to allow custom job design and reward design too. Finally, rewards are being redefined and because employees value many aspects beyond pay and benefits, you must have a Total Reward perspective that takes into account everything employees receive in return for working at your organisation.
